Domestic Violence

Domestic violence charges can involve spouses, family members, roommates, ex-girlfriends and ex-boyfriends and others who are in a domestic relationship.  Restraining or orders of protection are important tools for protecting people from domestic violence, physical violence, stalking and harassment.

KLS can assist you to obtain orders of protection or no contact orders if you are a victim.

At Karnes Legal Services, we also understand the effect an accusation of domestic violence can have on your job and your life.  If you have been wrongfully charged with assault or battery KLS can help to protect your rights.  If you have been issued an order of protection you can be prevented from contacting your spouse and your children,  going near your home or your spouse’s place of employment and be prevented from having guns.  You should not attempt to contact the victim yourself, as you could be jailed and charged with an additional crime for violating the no-contact order.

Only your lawyer should attempt to negotiate with the victim. If you are convicted of domestic violence, it can affect your job, your family life and your freedom. It can also be used against you in a divorce or child custody dispute.
